Review - Cubeworld

 Cubeworld By Karl Olsberg
Age range:  12+

Something peculiar is happening in the world of Marco;

"Where my hands should be, my arms end in square stumps"

The world he finds himself in is not the world he's supposed to be in. Everything is different... everything is square.

"I look up. Rectangular clouds move across a blue sky. A square sun sits low above the horizon"

Followed and haunted by the creatures of the world, skeletons, zombies, spiders and killer cucumbers, he knows he must find an exit from the Cubeworld. He works his way through the many challenges the world throws at him to escape by killing the deadly Enderman.

 My rating: 5/5!

Holy Notch. This makes me wish I could rediscover Minecraft again. While knowledge of minecraft is not necessary for reading the novel it does make it a little easier to understand. You understand the frustration of not being able to find coal to light your tunnels, the adrenaline rush when you have a creeper hissing at you... and of course, the fear of Minecraft spiders.

I picked up Cubeworld after browsing the Amazon kindle store, partly because I enjoyed Minecraft so much and it was a cheap ebook. Once I started to read I could not put it down; I read it all in one sitting.

Rather than being a novel just based on the world of Minecraft, Olsberg intertwines a real life story; the real life Marco and the in game Marco are both battling enemies and trying to escape.

To me, it also shows what happens when you play a game for far too long. I have certainly had dreams about games! (and I definitely had dreams about Minecraft back in the day). But mixing in other story elements made it a very unpredictable read.

Read it all in one sitting and very glad I picked it up. Mr Olsberg has done a fantastic job and I do hope the great God, Notch, also reads it!
